Why visit Zandvoort aan Zee?: The town of Zandvoort dates all the way back to 1100. It was then known as Sandevoerde (“Sand” and “Voerde,” which means ford). The town was controlled by the Lords of Brederode until 1722. Throughout much of Zandvoort’s history, fishing was a prominent part of the local economy. In the 19th century, the village began transforming into a seaside resort similar to the ones found in the UK at the time. The first resort was officially inaugurated in 1828. After the inauguration, tourists began flocking to Zandvoort. Elisabeth of Bavaria was a famous visitor who spent time in Zandvoort in 1884 and 1885.
Zuid-Kennemerland is one of Holland’s most beautiful national parks. The nature reserve is located just north of Zandvoort and the protected area covers 38km2 full of sand dunes, forests and wetlands. With over 100 different animal species, it’s an excellent place to spot birds and if you’re lucky you might even see wild deer, hedgehogs or red foxes. A visitor’s centre called Kennemerduinen is located at the main entrance to the National Park, which is a side street of Zeeweg (N200), just north of the Kennemerduinen bus stop. You can also get here by taking bus No.81 from the railway station in Zandvoort or by taking the six-minute train ride to Overveen. Then walk about 15 minutes west from there along Zeeweg. Besides beach lovers who like to enjoy the sun, the beach pavilions and the night live, Zandvoort attracts a lot of motorcycle fans too. In the dune area lays the racing circuit, where the formula 3000 races yearly take place. Circuit Park Zandvoort is located in the dunes and is known for its fast, sharp loops. At certain days it is possible to test your capability of driving on the circuit. The Circus Zandvoort stations an amusement hall, a cinema and a theatre. Furthermore there are lots of attractions, in which mainly children will have a good time. The Museum of Zandvoort is worth a visit as well.
